At the heart of ALIKE are powerful pairings of music by composers from countries often seen as adversaries—Russia and Ukraine, Iran and Israel. By including Lera Auerbach’s Postscriptum alongside Vasyl Barvinsky’s Song of Songs, and Kian Ravaei’s Morghe Sahar with Marianna Rosett’s Kaddish, the album invites listeners to hear beyond conflict and discover connection through sound.
Three orchestral works deepen this message: the first-ever English recording of Amy Beach’s Jephthah’s Daughter only recently rediscovered, having been a casualty of WWI; a new arrangement of Kim D. Sherman’s Invocation, in which she sets her fervent plea: “Make peace on all your lands” in 15 world languages; and, as a tribute to Allison’s mother whose vision of unity inspired the album, Dvořák’s Songs My Mother Taught Me, recorded in Prague, the composer’s birthplace.
